Wish for Fish

This week we got the early bird wake up call and joined the crowd at the pier. We had a request for Otaru but we hoped for Ahi too.
Set our lines at day break and wait for some action.
Found the porpoise aka puka heads and it was only a matter of time we would hook up.
First strike we let go a barracuda, next marlin shakes the hook, but we were able to get another bite later as James and Al work the reel.
Blue marlin on board hitting the blueberry gaji.
Hook an Otaru weighing in 22 lbs.
Papa crow was happy as he got his wish.

On the menu

Did some filming with Merlinda Garma for next HSDTV show. Surfers going to enjoy this episode.
The Heeia Pier Deli is under new management.  New menu too, which wasn't that good.
On the other hand this store had lots on the menu to choose from. Grabbed a few more gear for the final ahi run. Surf is dropping so time to catch our dinner for the week.
These two boys wanted to body board so took um to where I started my surfing career. I told um how I started off on the Burger King tray to body boards to surfboards, and never regretted any minute of it. They had lots of fun so that awesome!

Steady South Swell

South shore still pumping some nuggets with barrels of fun!
Must be challenging for the boaters to time the sets. Heard one sailboat is shipwrecked inside bowls.

Ahi Care

Ahi slabs doesn't getting any fresher than this. It's so important to take good care bleeding and icing your catches. If u catch a 100 lb fish make sure you have at least 100 lbs of ice minimum.
Sashimi for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Hanahou Fishing!

Woke up 3:00 am to get ready for another dawn patrol fish session. Surf dropped and haven't heard much good fish reports so best to go check for yourself. Skies were gloomy with showers but the fiery sunrise was spectacular. Not many other boats were out except me and some charter boats. In fact there were not much birds also but we were able to find one bird pile. We chased it for awhile until...
BAM! My outrigger pops and we are on! We get to leader in 20 minutes and I give it the kill shot with my 110 cm. speargun and it was game over.
We remove the gills and guts and see all the shrimp and ika in its stomach. Seas get rough so we decide to call it an early day. Hook a Ono on the way in and pull up the lines.
Mahalos again to my faithful crew James and Al who braved the rough waters and our behind the scenes support, Cat, Crow and Earline. Hanahou!

Best Fishing Day 2015!

Can u believe how glassy the water is? Nice day to dive but I heard from my informants that ahi was biting. That's all I need to hear.
Make a few calls to my crew and they were game!
My friend Brent Ching was just jonesing to get one this year so he followed "the force" and jumped in with me and James.
First bite, center screams and we land a marlin about 150 lbs. We thought it was dead but he still had life in him.
I see the tail moving so ask Brent to bat him one more time. The fish slams his tail on my hand and bruises my wrist and arm.  Ice um down and reset the lures and I was good to go.  Sun starts to rise and Brent passes around his "kabuki" sunscreen and BAM! Rigger pops and we get an Ahi on!
We clear lines and I have Brent Handline while I crank the reel. Hand over hand Brent works his way closer and all kinds of thoughts run through his mind. Don't come off, don't slack the line...after 25 minutes we get it in the boat and celebrations begin. Brent's first ahi of the year at 135 gng.
While bleeding the fish the ahi slides forward and mouth goes into my ankle. Itai!
We start icing it down as James climbs in the box while I brine the fish.  We reset and start heading in.
Boys were beat by now so they start looking for high flier birds while I look forward. I see a pack of birds moving and make my pass. Center slams down and we are on, again!
20 minutes we get to the leader and I pull out my speargun. It starts to swim away and hook is barely in. I aim and BAM! I hit the fish but guns recoils back between my eyes. False crack!
Start icing down the fish and my head and call it an early day!
What an amazing day! Got beat up but that's life! Put in your time and persistence pays off. Special thanks to James and Brent for joining me. Gaji lures for making those killer lures. Cat, Crow, Earline, Al for their help and support.  This was the best day of fishing yet!

Tune up!

Gotta service these babies today! They been working hard past few months. Thanks for keeping the Red Sea crew safe!

Fish therapy

Surf came down so time to go fishing. Boarded Wendells boat and our mission was to catch ahi.
Water was nice in the morning.
Two Ahi Addicts in remission in need of fish therapy.
We were blessed to have Jason Kornegay on board today who is a great fisherman. He taught us a lot and looked high and low for birds.
At 230 pm the rigger popped and we got one in the boat in 20 minutes.
This one clocked in at 135 g/g. Long day but well worth it. Thanks Wendell and Jason for a awesome day!

South swell continues in the head high range with some fun waves. Seems like everyone is burnt out with empty lineups. More surf coming so see you out there!
