Big unruly surf

Happy hump day! Busy working, editing and planning trips for the rest of the year. Lots of our red sea trips are selling out fast so hurry and plan your next vacation.

North winds will veer east then south as a new cold front approaches on Saturday.  Big north west swell with mixed periods and winds will make for confused breakers so be careful out there!

West Swell

West swell arrived on schedule with 4-8 ft sets. Body board contest at pipe so lot of locals had to surf off the wall.
Jockos also picks up west swells so had a quick surf to test my new Tokoro board.  Double overhead and six guys out.  Score! Tomorrow winds are switching and swell dropping  but more big surf will be coming end of the month.

Yamari in Hawaii

Welcome Atsuko and Kimura-san to Hawaii! Thank you for the shirasu and gifts from Japan!

North Swells

Pulled up to laniakea early but still lots of crowd. The state put up barricades but they basically moved the parking in front of the homes.
Still fun double overhead and long rides if you could get some.  I got one all the to the beach and called it a day.
Stopped to check pipe but lots of sand. Back door looked ok.
Saw my friend Timmy Rezantes and wade Tokoro checking the waves also. Timmy aka Ti-rez is always out if he's not flying on Hawaiian air.
Gabriel medina was out pupukea ripping! The north swell will drop tomorrow but a more west northwest is due on Friday.

Safety First

Imagine 50 miles out to sea and boat motors die out? What would do? Cell phone out range. No electrical power so your VHF or cb radio won't work.  Well push a button on this little device called an epirb/personal locator beacon and a signal is sent to the coast guard and they will find you! I think I will be taking this on my trips off island or abroad.
North swell fun today as I got a couple at laniakea.  Saw Carrisa Moore ripping it up along with the locals. Thanks John Galera for the photo today!

Final Catch!

We made it back from our mini boat trip safe and sound. Unloaded everything, washed up and took a group photo.  Wheres james?
Fish were not biting but we got lucky spearing. This uku came a little to close to my shaft.
Kekoa and I got some goats for the steamer as well.  Took us 2 hours to clean fish but no complaining.

Test New Ride

Today Kirby calls me up to test out his new boat, 23 ft glass cat.  I knew how excited he was and so stoked he is living his dream.  So we jump in and start breaking her in.

We open up the twin 115 hp yamahas and fly down to port lock as other boaters watch us staring intently at his new boat.  Beautiful scenery, rocks, spectators and fisherman enjoying their weekend off.
Kirby has been a great friend and dive partner and I'm looking forward to many more adventures together here in Hawaii and abroad. Thanks again Kirby for a great day on the water and congratulations on your new ride!  Outer islands here we come!

Surf with the pros

Volcom pipe pro finished up yesterday with some epic surf and congrats to Kelly Slater for winning.  I haven't got out there this year so decided to give it a go this am. It was either pipe or vland that would be best spots today.
Waves were 4-6 ft with some bigger ones and it was heavy but crowded. Saw adriano de Souza, tamayo perry, Seth moniz, and bunch of others who entered the competition. I got 3 waves and called it a day as more surfers came out. Pipe is a heavy localized spot and felt thankful for the opportunity to get to surf with the pros.

Surf rain or shine

Day 3 of rain kept lots of people indoors but if you surf or dive it doesn't make a difference as long as their waves or conditions are good. I paddled out to jockos on the north shore and saw 6 guys out, then 2 went in.  I got a couple waves then 2 more went in. Next thing just me and one other guy was out. Score! Got my share and went in as the after work crew came out.

Tokoro surfboards

Today got the call that every surfer wants to hear, "your boards are ready"!  So took a spin down to see Wade Tokoro.  We grew up surfing together in 7th grade and  it's always good to catch up with him. Wade has always been a great friend, brother and influence in my life. He is one of the most humblest guys in the lineup catching the biggest waves at any spot, ripping.
My other friend Barney was also working and he is always keeping is laughing. Back in the days we would surf 2-3 times per day and always come back to rest and eat at the Tokoro house. Mahalo Wade for the boards and can't wait to wax um up and go surfing! Check out www.tokorosurfboards.com for your magic board.

Who would ever imagine taking a Red Sea trip would change their lives?  Ask Mike and Eric Uyehara who's team name was "Pray for Big Fish" and speared their biggest fish of their lives at the 7th annual Mexican Shootout!  Premiers Tues. February 4th, 2014 on OC16 channel 12 or 1012 or online www.oc16.tv.  Mike and Eric already signed up to reserve their spot and with only a few team spots left for this years shootout you better and hurry to sign up before it's to late.

Superbowl Sunday is on and while we awaiting kickoff to begin our winter weather continues.  Light westerly winds veering northwest and back to trades for next few days before another cold front arrives on Wednesday switching the winds again.  Have a great weekend everyone!

New Cam Angle

As a camera man I'm always looking for another angle to shoot so yesterday we tested out another mount using my Intova camera and it looked good. So next time we hook up to the big one we should be able to get some good action!
