Sick waves!

Woke up early checked the buoys and cams and swell was running late. Lots of hungry surfers anxious to get waves.
Wasn't feeling good past few days from a  cold so decided to watch the Fiji pro day 1. Girls were ripping in some head high waves at cloudbreak.
3:17 pm I see the first real set start to roll in, a little drowsy from my medicine I decide now is the time. Pack my board and head to the beach with tissue in hand. After a couple overhead barrels I was all good and ready to come in. Crowd was mellow so stayed out a little longer than expected. Hopefully tomorrow be bigger and better!

This is a swordfish was caught later. I was so shocked to hear the news today.
Aloha Randy, going to miss you!

Hanapaa Shootout 2015

Surf was fun and nobody out again! Scored!  Did some endurance training with my nephews and headed down for the weigh in.
4 marlin came up today.
Biggest at 170 lbs.
Da Hij and his crew with a nice mahi.
Tako master Lionel Keahi with the biggest Ono.
Eveyone was waiting for the ahi. At the last moment this boat hooked one coming into the harbor.
It was looking big!
What s beauty! 211.2 lbs.  congrats to the crew of the Verna C.

Small or Big fish

Yamari shirasu doesn't get any fresher than this. Accompanied with picked ginger from my friend Allan Sato is so Ono.
On my way to grab a few waves I saw this huge marlin on the back of a boat.  Had a good session surfing with my Eastside boys Timmy and Cary. Just three of us out.

Puna fever

We headed out to catch ahi and my friends Wendell and Puna were out. We work together and Puna decided to come out after debating for a while. Luckily he did because as soon as he came out, hanapaa!
Congrats Puna on your first Ahi! So stoked for you! You got the fever now!

Live bait

Today's plan to catch some live bait. Kirby and Hayato rigging up lines.
Next step look for the bait. Kimura-san jumps in to look. He is the shirasu master or sensei. yamari shirasu is the best!
Step 3: catch fish! Not the fish I wanted but good to eat.
Bucket started to fill up fast. These are taape.
Kimura-san enjoying life!
Kirby and Hayato went for a dive lost an Ono but got a few goatfish.
But scored lots of fry and steam fish.  Thanks Kirby for taking us out!

I spy cam

Weather forecasting is lots of fun but nothing beats the live cams all over our island. Just wake up and turn on your computer for accurate wave heights. Watch out your boss may be spying on you on the next swell.
I can even monitor the amount of boats going out of the harbor. Today looks busy out there. Good luck and tight lines!

Fishing therapy day

Today POP had a big sale so we headed down to spend $$$ or should I say purchase supplies?
Most crowded day with 15-20% off. Line was out the door. Wall to wall people.
Saw my dive now turned fisherman friends shopping also. All have the fever like me. Here we are in our therapy addiction group in front of the fishing store about to go into withdrawals.
Even this little guy got the tilapia fever. Nice catch Maika! He asked me to take him fishing on the boat when school is done. He might get the fever too.

Ahi guns

Word on the street was ahis showed up so headed out to join the crowd. Lots of boats in the line up.
I saw a home made buoy floating today  and it was pretty sophisticated.
After we lost an ahi after 10 minutes of fighting we were bumming. But we did get a double strike and managed to land this Ono and wanna be Ono.
Al got a good work out today fighting his first ahi, check out those guns. Thanks Al, Kekoa and Crows valet service for a fun day. Will get um next time.

Shaping Surfboards 101

Today I took my nephews to the Tokoro factory.  Learn about how surfboards are made from Hawaii's top shaper Wade Tokoro.  They even got hands on experience.
Learned about the glassing process and resins.
Thanks Wade, Kerry and Gen for the tour!
Then they wanted to go to the pier.
Caught a few crabs for dinner? Good job guys. Learn how to live off the land and you will never go hungry.

Oi Rio Pro was On

Caught a few heats this morning with the girls surfing the Oi Rio Pro in challenging conditions.
The world surfing league is doing a great job making the tour more professional looking.
The guys always get the clean conditions!
Of course Gabriel Medina a local favorite!
Best part of a wave is in the barrel! Time to go surf? Still small background surf in town with breezy winds backing down a little to moderate speeds in the next few days.
