Go Dive Day!

My friend Travis Masutani wanted to go dive since weather was nice and he had a long work week.  We load up the kayaks and headed out a couple miles. We were so far out even charter fishing boats were tripping out on us two crazy divers.
This the scupper pro kayak which the best!  The water was clean and looked promising!  We chummed and flashed our lures and they came!
This Ono came in and Trav nailed it! His kayak took off, I jumped in my kayak and we chased it down.
It was huge and clocked in at 47 lbs. lots of sashimi for Super Bowl Sunday! Mahalos Travis for an awesome day of diving and the Super Bowl slabs.

Go Fish Day!

Southwest winds with dropping swells today so plan was to catch fish for Super Bowl party.
James Oshiro aka mcguyver joined me for the action. Set out our Gaji lures and bam! Hanapaa!
Fish in the box!  We were ready to come in by noon.
Mission accomplished! Mixed bag.
Kawakawa is also called wavy back tuna and the curvy lines on top identifies them.

My nephew Maika striking the pose! That's how you do it!

Sunset, Shoot and Surf

Been seeing some super nice sunsets in town lately. Everyone wanting to see the green flash.
We did some filming with Merlinda for Hawaii skin diver tv also. Had to look south to find the right backdrop to match her jams world dress. They have such great outfits! Thank you Jams World!
Finished off the weekend exercising in town and grabbing a few waves.  More good waves up north and light winds in store for mid next week.

Hawaii Surf Trip

It's been a awesome winter so far with back to back swells all over. I gotta leave my quiver in my car to have more options. If you've been visiting Hawaii you've been scoring!
Today chose to ride my Kashiwai 7'2 with a far paddle and bigger waves.
Couldn't believe nobody was out but me. Thought I was on a surf trip on some remote island.

Epic V-land

The waves up north continue to pump! Today I was pleasantly surprised to see only 5 other guys out at v-land with perfect 3-5 ft surf. Not very often I get to park so close to the path to the beach. Great surfing with Wade, Ed, Hayato and Randy today.  Big waves on tap for next few days so bust out the guns and be safe!

Holiday surf

Woke up early today and winds were light southeast so made a b-line to backdoor.  Looked like about a dozen guys out so headed out to grab a few waves.
Fun 3-5 ft barrels but soon got crowded, then realized it was Martin Luther king holiday. Lots of groms and the line up is so tight when you paddle you end up grabbing other surfers leashes.
Drove home passing my side of the island and thankful for a new day.

Surf Slippahs

Hope everyone been getting some good surf with these light winds. Checked pipe and backdoor in the morning but winds were west so headed east again.
I took out a 6'0 Tokoro and my surf slippahs to maximize my surf time. I took the shortest line from shore to the break. Lots of sharp coral and sea urchin to get in at the entry so walked over it with my crocs and once I was safe tossed it over the waves hoping it would make it back to shore. Got some fun waves with my friends Wade, Rick, Marteen, and Randy out there and when I came in guess what? My slippahs were waiting for me on the shoreline.

Fresh tuna catch

Today was another perfect day to be on the ocean so boarded Wendell Kos boat to look for more fresh fish.  Wendell is an awesome fisherman as well as diver.  He has the virus I do called "ahi fever".
We set out the lines and headed way out. The water was so flat and vog so bad it was hard to see birds.
We did manage to grab a few fish for our dinner tonight. Mix plate of shibi, akus and kawakawa.
Our last catch turned into this dried fish. The stores sell this for $29/lb.

Perfect Day to Fish!

Today was a picture perfect day for fishing and diving. Sheet glass with no winds this morning. Swell came down but will be back up tomorrow late afternoon.
Set out our lines and special Gaji lures again and hanapaa! Double even triples at times. By noon we were ready to come in.  Here Al Ah Nee holding a pair of akus. Thanks Al for the Ono sandwiches again!
Made it back with lots of daylight to clean fish.
Our table was barely big enough.
Fresh sashimi for the rest of the week!

Weather forecasting

One of my responsibilities to finding the best spots to surf or dive is watching the weather. Learning how low and high pressures work and how it affects our weather is key. Low pressures have a counter clockwise rotation and the tighter the gradient the stronger the storm. Winter time we have a lot of low pressures that form by the Aleutians.
As the winds or waves approach monitoring the buoys for eta of conditions provide the approx time of arrival. Today we will have a big north swell but unfavorable winds per above charts. Not much action on south so good day to get your work done because next week looks good!

3 E's to a happy life

It's been perfect conditions on the Eastside these past few weeks with fun surf. I've been driving up this coast for over 25 years and it never gets old. I paddled out early with one guy out and this guy tells me hi, come to find out it's my classmate from high school, Scott Salima. I'm still stoked to search for the best uncrowded waves as I was back in the day we used to surf 3x per day. I'm thankful for my health and happy to still enjoy the ocean. Eat healthy, exercise and enjoy life!
