Timing is everything

Wind and waves came down so we loaded up the Red Sea boat and headed out early to see what we could find.  Searched high and low but not much action only a few rat akus.  We kept the big lures out with the intent to go big or go home.  So decided to head in and call it a day, then Cat and Al spot a fin behind our lure.  Next it starts whacking the lure then BAM!  Corner pole slams and we get to work.  After 30 minute battle we get it to the boat and as I dispatch the fish the hook falls off and the fish starts floating away.  Oh No!  Should I jump in? I tell Cat to back up and we somehow get a gaff in the tail, then another gaff but it's not dead yet!  I grab the bill and Al puts him to sleep and the rest was history.

Biggest marlin we caught thus far.

It was too big to fit in our boat probably over 300 lbs.

Mahalos to our Red Sea land and sea crew for another exciting day on the water.  Timing is everything and we just so happen to be in the right place at the right time.  Looking forward to some smoked marlin soon!

Help find Mike

Saw a sad and disturbing IG post from fellow diver Mike Friggin Hong.  He is a talented photographer and contributed a lot to HSD magazine.  He wrote on social media he was going to call it quits in life!

Having suffered physical pain due to nerve issues and now depression.  He needs to be found and is located on the Big Island.  When one part of the body hurts we all hurt!  Hope he is found!

Service week

Windy unfavorable weather conditions for ocean activities means its a great time to service up the toys. Reels breakdown and boats are always under repair so gearing up for the next round of nice weather.  Keep warm, work hard, stay healthy and get ready for action!

Weekend Outlook

Its not often you see a storm of this magnitude develop near the Hawaiian Islands.  Deep low pressure stalled and is doing a circle back toward the islands tomorrow (Sunday).  Strong North winds today will give way to Gale force Westerly winds tomorrow and slowly ease off through the first part of the week.  Expect high winds, some roofs flying off and down trees this weekend.  Big XXL surf will peak tonight and slowly decline.  Be safe and have a nice weekend!

Smoked Marlin

After a couple of days of soaking we finally got to put the smoker to the test.  First batch came out good.  A mix of kiawe, guava chips helped make it even more tasty.

Threw in a tako for bonus and everyone was happy!  Gotta go catch another marlin now, lol

Super Bowl Sash

Mission was to find a fish or two for our upcoming family Super Bowl party.  Conditions were super rough with high surf warnings and strong 30 knots winds in the forecast.  We were the only guys out fishing and it was crazy!  We left at dark and could only see waves 5 ft in front of the boat which made it challenging. Waves were breaking in the channel but we made out ok going super slow 4 knots.  Finally got to our grounds and laid our spread of Gaji lures as we got to work!

First Nairagi or striped marlin for 2019.  It came up to the boat green "alive" and started bolting under the boat until my starboard propeller caught his head and he was done!  Last year we had the hardest time landing a marlin too.

We even a a four banger hebi landing 3 out of the 4. Along with some akus, mahis and ono to add to the mix.  Came home cut the fish up just in time for the game!

Some of the pupus.

half the spread shown here.

Along with Menpachi Walter and Akule Joe to reminisce about the good ol days.  Thank you to my crew for their support in providing the super bowl 53 sash.  A day to remember!

A friend of mine sent this video to be careful of becoming addicted to your phone.  Where do you stand on this issue?  Think about it!
