Warm up day 2

Another nice day at the Red Sea Baja Shootout! How's this custom signage.
Spectacular views overlooking cerralvo island.
A place for the family to hang out.

The security dogs cabria and saika. Always wanting a pet from the guests.
Crazy Mexicans made it to the comp and very good divers.  So I followed them around today with my camera.
Got a few nice fish today for the cause.  We must be half way to reaching our goal for sending the student to high school for one year.
Time to clean fish and get ready for tomorrow's day 1 of the competition.

Warm up dive day 1

We made it to La Paz with all our gear and prizes in tact! Settled in to our specialty casita, unpacked, set up my cameras, ate dinner and went to sleep by midnight.
We are so thankful to all our sponsors for supporting the event!
This girl on the right is the reason we ate spearing fish.  She wants to be a teacher someday so we are excited to help her go to high school.
Lots of new improvements here like this flashing neon sign over the bar.
We all were tired today since its 4 hrs ahead on time.  So waking up at 630  felt like 230 am to us Hawaiians.
I followed this guy Evan today and he's an excellent diver. All the action was on the reef today. He got this nice 50 plus pound pargo today and we got it all on film.  Stoked!

South swell?

Surf came up last night and seemed to have peaked with some head high sets. Today was a little crossed up swell as it dropped off in size. It could be better, it could be worse but just feel lucky we live in paradise. Time to start packing for the 2014 Red Sea Baja Shootout...I got a plane to catch!

Give Aloha...

Anybody heard of Billy Kenoi?  He is the mayor of the Big Island of Hawaii and a local boy who has risen and making a difference.  He gave a speech to the 2014 graduates of HPU which inspired many.  I remember how hard it was in college and how important it was to study hard and never giving up.  As you get more, give more...as you learn, teach others.  Congratulations to all you graduates out there and learn how to "Give Aloha", it doesn't cost you anything.

Symptoms

Got a call from Kirby, he not feeling good. Hmm..whats the symptoms I ask? He cannot sleep, dreaming of yellow sickles and wasabi.  Ok he says meet me at 4:30 am at my boat and I may have the solutions.  Just bring the colorful heads with long appendages with razor sharp hooks.  I say ok I will be there!
His brother Mason and Nate join the ride to satisfy their symptoms.  The boat is rocking, nausea kicks in and 3 hours later they are ready to go home.  I tell them it usually takes me 3 full 12 hours days on the water to alliviate these symptoms but they are over it as we scarf down a few zip-packs.

I'm not sure if this "just what they needed" but we all had a fun day on the water.  Thanks Kirby, Mason, Nate for a great day!  I had lots of fun!

Priceless View

Of all the places we travel, this view is priceless and one of my favorite views in the world.  This is Kaneohe, my home!

2014 Mexican Shootout Cause

This year's Mexican Shootout we are sponsoring one student to attend high school for a year.  Meet Antonia Aviles!  She is so happy and looking forward to meeting our divers at the event.  Each pound of fish caught will be sold to local fish buyer and all the monies will go toward her education.  Thank you to all our generous sponsors and divers for joining us!  Looking forward to a fun event.

Kayak Diver

My friend Travis Masutani sent me these pics of his latest Kayak Dive.  Who needs a boat when you can save gas and catch lots of fish? Nice Uku and Kawakawa!

This is called a Herepoti.  Similar to opelu kala.

And nice Mahi to top it off.  Good Job Trav and mahalos for the ono sashimi!

Ahi Fever 2014

Ahi Fever 2014 is off to a great start!  Word on the street was fish was biting so called up my fishing partner Kekoa Mau and we were ready to hook up.  We blaze it to the "da spot" and no more than 5 minutes our lures were in the water a marlin strikes the port corner reel.  The fish jumps and comes off. Lines back in and bamm!  The center 12/0 screams and I know its an ahi.
This was Kekoas first Ahi so I was so happy for him to get the "monkey of his back".  He has been the most persistent guy and now is ready to retire.

My nephews Kai and Maika also got a picture as well.  Look the fish is bigger than them!
We also got a ono and since the ice was low we called it a early day.

What a great day  it was for us both.  At last, Ahi Fever!  Thanks to the Red Sea Crew for all their help at the ramp, loading, unloading, cleaning, cooking...

Doesn't get fresher than this platter of Ahi and Ono.  Perfect for our upcoming Father's Day celebration.

Weekend Waves

Another bump with overhead set on the south shores so waxed up got a few barrels during the evening session and life was good!
Went to check on my new boat to see if it was ready to travel around the world. I wish! Saw this boat parked for a week now near aloha tower.
Meet Yuki! Looks like a stuffed animal but its real. South swell continues and fish are biting so gotta get going.  Have a great week!

Dry dock

Hanging at the pier with my nephews, saw this boat stuck on the reef.  Bummers!  New state law will require all boaters to pass a exam to be licensed to drive a boat. Good thing I took that class:)

There will be a day...

Seems like lots of people have been facing the battles of life with the loss of loved ones, pain and suffering.  There are lots we can learn from the kids around us.  Click here to learn a lesson from 7-year old.    Pass it on to those around you who are facing hard times.

Japan to Hawaii

Still can't believe we were able to meet these famous bluefin fisherman.  The man in the center, Mr. Yonezawa is a legendary blue fin fisherman who we are so thankful we got to meet in person.  Next to meeting the Ama-san divers on our last trip this has to be one of the most inspirational meetings we have ever had.  Thank you to all the fisherman and our divers and Mr. Wada and Toda-san for helping set this all up.
After all that food in Japan, I had to begin my exercise program so headed down to the beach to grab a few waves.  Saw 4 guys ripping so paddled out to find Josh Moniz, Kylen Yamakawa, Kaito Kino and their friend out.  Talked a little and came in to see these japanese newlyweds on the beach.  So cool to see Japanese starting their new life visiting Hawaii.
